Frage

Write a short text characterizing yourself or someone you know. Make sure to include the following characteristics when characterizing.

  • Appearance
  • Behavior
  • Personality
  • Thoughts
Antwort anzeigen

Antwort

  • Appearance:
My name is Melanie and I am 17 years old. I have long blonde hair that I love to put up in a ponytail. My eyes have the common color brown, but they are pretty big. Moreover, I am only 155 cm tall.
  • Behavior:
I would describe myself as ambitious and motivated, which stresses me out sometimes. So they are good and bad qualities at the same time. At uni, I volunteer to help new students find their way around, so that they have an easier time to settle in.
  • Personality:
Generally, I am a nice person, but I can also be very direct. I hate when people ramble and don't tell me what exactly it is they want to tell me.
  • Thoughts:
I always think that people think that I am trying to be better than them, but that is not true. I simply try my best to deliver high-quality work.

Note that this is a task for the student to get a feeling for what kind of characteristics exist. Also remember that this is an example.

List the ways in which Cinderella is characterized in the following extract.

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl named Cinderella. She lived with her wicked stepmother and two stepsisters. They treated Cinderella very badly. One day, they were invited for a grand ball in the king’s palace. But Cinderella’s stepmother would not let her go. Cinderella was made to sew new party gowns for her stepmother and stepsisters, and curl their hair. They then went to the ball, leaving Cinderella alone at home.

Cinderella felt very sad and began to cry. Suddenly, a fairy godmother appeared and said, “Don’t cry, Cinderella! I will send you to the ball!” But Cinderella was sad. She said, “I don’t have a gown to wear for the ball!” The fairy godmother waved her magic wand and changed Cinderella’s old clothes into a beautiful new gown! The fairy godmother then touched Cinderella’s feet with the magic wand. And lo! She had beautiful glass slippers! “How will I go to the grand ball?” asked Cinderella. The fairy godmother found six mice playing near a pumpkin, in the kitchen. She touched them with her magic wand and the mice became four shiny black horses and two coachmen and the pumpkin turned into a golden coach. Cinderella was overjoyed and set off for the ball in the coach drawn by the six black horses. Before leaving. the fairy godmother said, “Cinderella, this magic will only last until midnight! You must reach home by then!”

Frage

Read the following paragraph and summarize it in German.

Chronic kidney disease affects one in 10 adults worldwide, and in more prosperous countries, it’s often associated with diseases such as diabetes or hypertension. But in the past few decades, young people—primarily agricultural workers from very hot, rural, poor parts of the world—have been showing up at clinics with advanced stages of kidney failure that could not be tied to other conditions.

Frage

Read the following paragraph and summarize it in English.

The new coronavirus is one of the number one topics on the news, as it has been found in more than 15 countries. It originated in Wuhan, but has even reached countries like Germany or the US. However, nobody talks about another virus that comes back every year and has already killed more than eight thousand people in 2020: the flu.

Many precautions have been taken to keep the coronavirus from spreading, such as health screenings at airports and flight cancellations to China. Nevertheless, people who have to travel by plane can't take those kinds of precautions, but have to try to avoid everyone who is sneezing.

Frage

Explain to a German speaker in two sentences what happened in the following text.

Susie had been enjoying her day off until she came home. She wanted to connect her phone to her speakers in order to listen to her music while cleaning the house. After searching forever, she finally had to accept that her phone was gone. Someone must have stolen her phone on the train home. Luckily, she signed up for a service that locates your phone whenever you cannot find it. She nervously put in the details and was surprised that the phone was located right outside her house. She hectically rushed outside and found it on the ground. Laughingly, she realized that she must have dropped it when looking for her keys.

How many transitional words are used in the following text?

To sum up, I learned that a word is not always usable in every context although the translation of the word is the one you are looking for. Sometimes, there are two different words or more to explain one thing. But, they always need to be differentiated in order to use them in the right context. Consequently, you cannot just look up a word and take the first given one to create your sentence. You need to look out for the contextual meaning. Additionally, I learned that people coming from the same country often do the same mistakes because they connect them to their mother-tongue and, therefore, use the word that sounds more similar to the word they already know.

Frage anzeigen

Frage

What is "Haiku Poetry" and which specific structure, style, and Japanese philosophy does it follow?

Antwort anzeigen

Antwort

  • Unrhymed poetry
  • Three lines totalling 17 syllables ("On" in Japanese standing for counting phonetic sounds)
  • Structured in a 5-7-5 pattern: five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five in the last
  • Philosophy: Should be read in one breath; the focus is on a brief, beautiful and (in)significant moment, featuring an image and often describing nature.
  • Simple yet sensory language
  • The third line is followed by a short break which enhances the emotions and energy of the poem

In the following, I share two famous haikus as an example for you to better understand the structure:

“Lighting One Candle” by Yosa Buson

The light of a candle

Is transferred to another candle—

Spring twilight

“Over the Wintry” by Natsume Sōseki

Over the wintry

Forest, winds howl in rage

With no leaves to blow.

Many English and American writers have adapted the  "Haiku"- structure, like the famous American poet Ezra Pound whose short poem "In A Station of the Metro" is considered to be the first haiku written in English:

The apparition of these faces in the crowd:
Petals on a wet, black bough.
