Organic chemistry

carboxylic acid to acyl chloride and back?

(->) -SOCl2

(<-) -H2O cold

Organic chemistry

carboxylic acid to ester and back?

(->) alcohol + acid catalyst

(<-) dilute acid or alkali, reflux

Organic chemistry

acyl chloride to amide ?

- NH3, primary

- amine, secondary

Organic chemistry

acyl chloride to ester ?

(->) alcohol, 20c

Organic chemistry

hydroxynitrile to carboxylic acid?

- dilute HCL, reflux

Organic chemistry

testing for carboxylic acid?

-add 2cm3 of carbonate solution

- if fizzing occurs, bubble the gas it produces through some limewater in a second test tube.

-if the limewater turns cloudy then its a carboxylic acid

- if limestone clear after bubbling then no carboxylic acid.

Organic chemistry

how do you test for Alkenes?

1) add 2cm3 of the unknown substance in a test tube

2) add 2cm3 of orange bromine water to test tube

3) shake the test tube.

4) if alkene is present then the solution goes colourless if not then stays orange.

Organic chemistry

what are amines ?

if one or more hydrogens in ammonia (NH3) is replaced with an organic group
