the basilar membrane is thick and thight at the beginning and gets thiner and more elastic at the tip, different frequencies are perceived at different haircells in the membrane, high frequencies are recognized rather at the beginning and mean a total distraction of the hair cells, low frequencies travel the whole way through the cochleader

- the ear is most sensitiv between 2000 und 4000 Hz

- they are perceived less loud with the same intensity 
  • - the loss of sensitivity is higher with high frequencies than with lower ones
