In the development of osteoclasts, how is the development encouraged?

In what condition is this increased?

The development of osteoclasts from the progenitor cell or from osteoblasts is controlled by nuclear transcription factor kB. It is activated by a cascade triggered by the RANK-Receptor on the cells surface. The receptor activity is triggered by RANK-ligand, a soluble protein produced by many different cells. 

This RANK-ligand can be bound, and thereby inactivated by Osteoprotegerin. 


Increased levels of RANK-L are observed after the menopause -> might lead to osteoporosis.
