the application of system theory, being a process to solve problems, involving the wider system, breaking apart the parts, and figuring how it works in order to achieve a particular goa

What is system thinking?

discipline/approach of system theory, based on the belief that the component parts of a system will act differently when isolated from the system’s environment or other parts of the system. It explores interrelationships, perspectives and boundaries to address complex problem situations. It is a causality driven approach to describe the interrelations between parts and systems.

What is system dynamics? 

discipline/approach of system theory, for understanding the nonlinear behaviour of complex systems over time using stocks, flows, internal feedback loops, table functions and time delays. It quantifies the impact on the interactions between parts and systems. Created by Jay Forrester in 1956.

What is a system?

o   Old Greek word for: a collection of parts that interact to function as a unified whole, where the whole is more than the sum of its parts (emergent properties).

o   The blind men and the elephant analogy: blind men touching different particular elephant parts, without being able to figure out the whole picture. Each felt on part out of many, and therefore perceived the elephant wrongly.

o   Dictionary definition: a regularly interacting or interdependent group of items forming a unified whole (e.g. biological system, computer system, ecosystem, business system, social system, political system, regional system, etc.)

closed system influenced by its past behaviour and with feedback loop structure that consists of closed paths of cause and effect.

Explain the challenges of complexity and change

o   The real world is full of complexity:

  • Structural Complexity
  • Functional Complexity
  • Combinatorial Complexity
  • Dynamic Complexity

o   Change is the major challenge for decision-makers responsible for maintaining natural resources, it can be positive and welcoming or negative and devastating. The problem is that change mostly comes unexpected.

o   System thinking is needed to overcome complexity, as humankind has created more information than anyone can absorb (Peter Senge, the Fifth Discipline).

What are the key questions to understand systems?

  • Can you identify parts?
  • Do the parts influence each other?
  • Do the parts as a whole produce an effect that is different from the effect of each part on it own?
  • Does the effect, the behaviour over time, persist in a variety of circumstances?

Name the steps to be a systems thinker

o   Develop awareness: seeking to understand the big picture, by observing patterns and trends, interdependencies, etc.

o   Increase understanding: by changing perspectives, testing assumptions, and not rushing into conclusions.

o   Plan and take action: by using understanding of system structure to identify possible leverage actions.

o   Follow all these habits: by checking results and changing actions if needed: “successive approximation”.
