Empirical Research Methods

Well of Theory and Empiricism

On the right side we have Theory:
Theories followed by deductive reasoning and a new hypothesis.
On the left side we have Empiricism:
The new hypothesis is falsified or proven by observations. Followed by a new thesis build with induction, followed by empirical generalizations which become new theories.

We can start everywhere on this wheel.

Empirical Research Methods

What is induction?

abstracting a proposition from data
-empirical generalization

Empirical Research Methods

What is deduction?

reasoning from general proposition/theory to specific implications

Empirical Research Methods

What makes theory good?

falsifiability
accuracy
generalizability (rather go big and be really wrong)
parsimony (fewer assumptions)

Empirical Research Methods

  1. Thoughts on theory.

Corroborated does not mean correct. better: not yet been found incorrect.
Popper: we can never know something is true. Thus falsifiability must be given in every good theory. Predictions/tests must be specifiable that can have a negative outcome, good theory makes lots of predictions beyond its past evidence base

Empirical Research Methods

Theory generation via the scientific method

The process relies on empiricism, things need to be observable. Only what is empirically observed can become the basis of theory; Science vs. Philosophy.
Data need to be collected objectively, (impossible). Better: replicable/reproducible and testable intersubjectively. Research methods fully disclosed and described.

Control: data need to be collected and presented without bias.
Correct selection of: people, method
Correct application of: method
Correct presentation of: results

Empirical Research Methods

What means "corroborated"

to be supported frequently by different scientists

Empirical Research Methods

Data analysis

data preparation
descriptive statistics
inferential statistics
