If a low quantity has to be made and skilled employees are available then piecewise assembly can be used.

- Only bottlenecks show us

a) the potential 

b) their priority 

- you have to allow bottlenecks, but make them visible and measurable and identify permanently (push bottleneck-visibility, possibly artificial) 

- Get active: Focus on the bottlenecks, with priority, and focus the problem solving energy on the point. Make sure, they get eliminated at once (lasting)

- permanently means: repetitive/ "infinity" repeated

Advantages:

- more flexible than flow- line production

- more efficient than standalone assembly 

- greater number of components is possible than in standalone assembly 


Disadvantages:

- still buffers between workstations, sequence change possible (less controlled, but also less restricted, than flow- line assembly

Local/box assembly 

 (construction site assembly): 

- lots of material and information flow

- high requierements on synchronisation

+ very high flexibility in assembly 


Flow- line assembly: 

- (once) preplanning extensive, higher requierements on punctuality

+ short and straight material and information channels; good transparency and feasibility

+ standardisation, planning certainty 

+ productivity
