The Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) was developed to reduce the long-term consequences of cervical spine injuries for front passengers in rear-end collisions.

 Very low-speed accidents (2.5 - 4 kph)
 Crash repair tests (10 - 15 kph)
 Crash tests for occupant protection (approx. 64 kph)

represents a relatively weak connection between two body parts with large mass
(head and torso).

a. Repeated local deformations leading to microstructural changes in the material structure, strain hardening and embrittlement and later to the formation of microcracks from which the crack leading to failure  develops.
