ID

What are characteristics of personas?
- based on research - individual people (realistic, imaginable) - represent a whole group - explore ranges of behavior, preferences, etc. - non-user: not necessarily an end user (stakeholder) - have motivation (goal to use the product) - have goals: end goals (for complementing the user, functional use), experience goals (for affect/emotions --> Apple), life goals (personal/cultural meaning --> iPhone10)

ID

Learning & Design
Interfaces need to be designed –-> (Easy) Learnability as desired quality Users need to learn operation of interface Developers have to learn about users (their state of knowledge etc.)

ID

Intuitiveness
Intuitiveness in ID doesn't exist Every user has its of intuitive perception depending on experience

ID

What is the WIMP paradigm?
Windows Icons Menus Pointer

ID

What are advantages of video prototypes?
no need to implement complex functions building simple mock-ups and adding special effects (by video editing)

ID

What are best-practice characteristics of a system regarding the different models?
1. Transparency: conceptual and mental model are identical (no need for user to think about aspects of the implemented model) --> e.g. moving a file 2. Flexibility: various ways to reach the same goal --> e.g. copying a file

ID

What are characteristics of personas?
- based on research - individual people (realistic, imaginable) - represent a whole group - explore ranges of behavior, preferences, etc. - non-user: not necessarily an end user (stakeholder) - have motivation (goal to use the product) - have goals: end goals (for complementing the user, functional use), experience goals (for affect/emotions --> Apple), life goals (personal/cultural meaning --> iPhone10) --> project: Kimberly (24), Canada, shop assistant, dog, fashion & beauty, healthy lifestyle, meeting friends, dancing, open-minded, outgoing, curious, unorganized

ID

Why are personas useful?
- avoiding the "elastic user" phenomenon - a product serving many customer group will result in low user satisfaction

ID

How are personas constructed? (process)
Step 1: Group interview subjects by role Step 2: Identify behavioral variables: activities, attitudes, aptitudes, motivations, skills Step 3: Map interview subjects to behavioral variables Step 4: Identify significant behavior patterns Step 5: Synthesize characteristics and relevant goals Step 6: Check for completeness and redundancy Step 7: Designate persona types Step 8: Expand description of attributes and behavior

ID

What is a scenario?
- story/narration/storyboard - brings persona into a scene --> tells how persona achieves the goal - source for defining requirements (=triples action/object/context) - later in development process: use scenarios to test prototypes by going through scenarios --> project: Kimberly is driving home from work, calling bf, texting w/ friends

ID

Types of scenarios!
- context scenario: "day-in-the-life" scenario - key path scenario: most significant user interactions, vocabulary of design - validation scenario: test design in variety of situations, including extreme cases, errors, failures

ID

Which tools and techniques can be used for the different steps?
Understanding: brainstorming, mind-mapping, talking to ppl affected by the problem, interviews Designing: conceptual design (post-its), mock-up Envisioning: prototypes (not concrete or physical design) , concept video (no details of the solution, rather problem defining) Evaluating: Lab evaluation (expensive), field experience, cognitive walkthrough (cheap)
