  • By the end of week 4, the pronephros will start to disppear and degenerate!

how does the mesonephros develop? and what does it usually start occurring?

mesonephros will be caudal to the pronephros and are S-shaped tubules in the thoracic and lumbar intermediate mesoderm

  • functions temporarily until permanent kidney is formed! 
  • will basically grow down to the bottom of the cloaca in a caudal fashion 
  • none of the mesonephric duct will actually contribute to the formation of adult kidney EXCEPT for the mesonephrogenic diverticulum (that will form the ureteric bud!) 


will start developing from late week 4 and will degenerate during first trimester (by the beginning of month 3) --> but mesonephric tubules and ducts will give rise to deriatives in male and female reproductive tract (wolffian duct) 


note: mesonephric deriatives = wolffian duct
