  • model organism: easy manipulation, 20min division, using plasmids and restriction enzymes to create recombinant DNA or proteins; transfer DNA via conjugation or transduction 
  • production of insulin
  • flagellated strains are motile, peritrichous arrangement; also attaches to microvilli in intestine
  • pathogenic: faecal-oral transmission; diarrhoea and urinary tract
  • outer membrane consists of LPS molecules, which consist of O antigen, core region, lipid A (endotoxin)
  • infection (use fimbriae)
  • indicator organisms for faecal contamination
