Knowledge Management

Explain the mode of knowledge creation internalization

Internalization is the conversion of explicit knowledge into tacit knowledge. An example is an HR manager who reads an organization’s guidelines for dispute resolution and puts them into practice.

Knowledge Management

Explain the difference between codification and personalization in the dimension of competitive strategy

  • Codification - Provide high-quality, reliable, and fast information system implementations by reusing codified knowledge
  • Personalization - Provide creative, analytically rigorous advice on high-level strategic problems by channeling individual expertise

Knowledge Management

Which role models are part of communities

  • Knowledge owner
  • Expert
  • Moderator
  • Knowledge networker
  • Team/project officer
  • Chief knowledge officer
  • Sponsor
  • Boundary spanner

Knowledge Management

Explain the fundamental approach Personalization to designing a KM strategy

Personalization aims at solving strategic problems by channeling individual expertise and providing creative and analytically rigorous advice.

Knowledge Management

Explain the fundametnal approach Codification to designing a KM strategy

Codification means the reuse of codified knowledge facilitated by high quality and fast IS.

Knowledge Management

What are the two fundamental approaches to designing KM strategy

  • Codification
  • Personalization

Knowledge Management

Explain the difference between codification and personalization in the dimension of IT

  • Codification - Invest heavily in IT; the goal is to connect people with reusable codified knowledge.

  • Personalization - Invest moderately in IT; the goal is to facilitate conversations and the exchange of tacit knowledge

Knowledge Management

Briefly describe the type of community: Semi-formal network

Semi-formal networks are a pre-stage of knowledge networks with fewer specific targets or role distributions.

Knowledge Management

Explain the difference between codification and personalization in the dimension of KM strategy

  • Codification - PEOPLE-TO-DOCUMENTS: Develop an electronic document management system that codifies, stores, disseminates, and allows reuse of knowledge.

  • Personalization - PERSON-TO-PERSON: Develop networks for linking people so that tacit knowledge can be shared.

Knowledge Management

Briefly describe the type of community: Knowledge network

  • Knowledge networks are defined by the constant collaboration of their members, which is aimed at developing and using knowledge.
  • The members are experts with either homogeneous or complementary knowledge.
  • The goals of knowledge networks are fixed and aligned with the organizational goals and are therefore usually formed for several years.
  • Knowledge networks are very structured, since all their members have differing roles and responsibilities

Knowledge Management

Briefly describe the type of community: Community of practices and communities of interest

  • Communities of practices enable the exchange of knowledge between various community members with similar working activities and responsibilities within the organization.
  • Conversely, communities of interest enable knowledge transfer between community members with similar personal interests regardless of their daily work.
  • The formation of such communities is rather self-motivated and from the bottom up. The disbanding of such communities is a joint decision by their members.

Knowledge Management

Briefly describe the type of community: project team

  • Project teams are officially formed to achieve a specific goal.
  • Team members are therefore selected from various departments for their skills and knowledge, which will allow them to achieve the goal most efficiently.
  • After their goal has been reached, the project team is disbanded.
