Students gain the ability to systematically analyze concrete political processes and conflict transformation. The module covers practical instruments for comprehensive conflict analysis and various approaches of conflict management including conflict resolution, conflict transformation, and mediation training.

Students understand the creation of political, economic and normative order beyond the nation state on global and regional levels. The module covers institution building, norm-diffusion, global trade structures, development cooperation, Human Rights regimes, and regional forms of cooperation.

Violence and Media
Students analyze the depiction of conflicts and legitimation of organized violence in public discourses. The module examines discourses on violence in different media, including political language, ethnic and religious categorizations, enemy stereotypes, and violence-reducing communication strategies.

International Module
The module transfers credits gained during an international exchange at a different university outside of Germany. It provides space for seminars completed abroad in humanities and languages with focus on intercultural communication and experiences of living and working in other cultures.

Practical Experience
Students complete a mandatory 6-week internship at an organization relevant to Peace and Conflict Studies such as NGOs, research institutions, foundations, ministries, or media. Alternatives include certified language courses or volunteering/paid work for a minimum of 240 hours over 6 months.

Theories and Approaches of Peace and Conflict Studies
Students learn important theories, approaches and concepts in Peace and Conflict Studies and critically reflect on different scientific theories and approaches. The module includes a lecture with an associated tutorial on key texts of central PACS concepts like peace, conflict, war, and violence.

Concepts of Securing Peace
Students learn scientific and political concepts of securing peace, Human Rights and democracy and evaluate their prospects of success. The module covers approaches to peace building, integration measures for peace, military intervention, and the role of international organizations and NGOs.

Methods of Peace and Conflict Studies
Students acquire fundamental knowledge on qualitative social research methods and learn to apply these techniques for their Master's thesis. The module covers research processes, epistemological perspectives, and various qualitative methods including interviews, case studies, surveys, and content analysis.

Global Justice
Students understand the correlation between justice, peace and war and reconstruct the complexity of this relation. The module covers distributional justice, transitional justice in post-conflict societies, democratic participation, legitimacy of Global Governance institutions, and the relationship between justice, peace and democracy.

Applied Peace and Conflict Studies
Students gain practical insights into either applied conflict management with negotiation and mediation techniques or applied scientific research including publication processes and conference attendance. The module uses block seminars with practical elements to connect theoretical knowledge with practice.

Sustainability Conflicts and Governance of Natural Resources
Students critically evaluate issues of quantitative growth, global warming, and sustainability approaches. The module addresses anthropogenically caused environmental change, resource scarcity, distribution conflicts, and different strategies for sustainable development and resource governance.
4. Semester30 ECTS
Master's thesis
Students independently work on a specific research question applying scientific methods. The module consists of a research seminar, the Master's thesis (60 pages), and an oral defense (45 minutes). Students must compile an overview of current research, identify a research problem, develop a research question, and obtain research results.
