❗️Cognitive Map

In a labyrinth experiment, references to the so-called "cognitive map" were found. Please briefly describe the experimental setup and explain the term "cognitive map".

2 groups of rats are put in a labyrinth

#1 group directly gets food in the middle of the labyrinth

#2 group initially does not get any food

#1 group learns the way into the center of the labyrinth

#2 group is just wandering around the labyrinth, does not learn the way

in the end, #2 group gets food too, and even learns more quickly the way into the center than #1 group

Conclusion: Rats built a cognitive map of the labyrinth even without having food as a goal

Cognitive map: a visual representation for someone’s mental model for a given process.

❗️Motivation to learn in CoP

Where does the motivation of an individual come from to learn in a practice community?

  • Aim of learning: Sharing in a practice community, not primarily an object to be learned
  • Members participate because of the offered value by the community of practice
  • They want to be affiliated to the practice community

CSCL by Depe

❗️How did our understanding of the roles of teacher and learner change with modern learning scenarios?

  • First we look at role of teacher & learner in more traditional, objectivistic approach:
    • Knowledge represents objective facts
    • Knowledge is transmitted from the teacher to the learners
  • We can compare it with about 2 modern learning approach/theories: constructivistic approach & socio-cultural approach
  • In constructivistic approach,     Knowledge is constructed by the learner, Information of the teacher can support the process of construction
  • While in socio-cultural approach: Knowledge is results of allocation of meanings in communities
  • Teachers can support the building of communities (practice, language, usage of tools, norms and values )

CSCL by Depe

❗️Difference between early Behaviorism and Neo-Behaviorism

  • Critique towards early behaviourism showed that there is something happening in the “Blackbox” (the cognitive processes occuring between stimulus & response).
  • Neo-behaviorism tries to integrate these “Blackbox”-processes

❗️Tele-lecture Design Problems

What challenges / problems do you expect when designing a tele-lecture?

  • Technical challenges
    • Connectivity & battery life
    • Screen size & key size
    • Number of file/assets‘ formats supported by a specific device
  • Social & educational challenges
    • Accessibility and cost barriers for end users
    • How to assess learning outside the classroom
    • How to support learning across many contexts
    • Content’s security (or) pirating issues
    • Frequent changes in device models/technologies/functionality etc.
    • Developing an appropriate theory of learning for the mobile age
    • Design of technology to support a lifetime of learning
    • Tracking of results and proper use of this information
    • No restriction on learning timetable

CSCL by Depe

❗️Insight in Gestalt Theory

What is called "insight" in Gestalt theory?

  • Core mechanism of Gestalt theory
  • Abrupt perception of relations between elements of a problem solving situation.
  • A break in the process of learning, i.e. as a real emergence of a solution: the correct adaptive response appears suddenly without being visibly dependent direct on the tests and errors that preceded it

CSCL by Depe

❗️Models needed to develop ITS

  • Model of the Knowledge Domain
Describes the knowledge to be learned of the domain of knowledge.
    • Declarative knowledge
Terms of one field of knowledge, with attributes & relation to each other
    • Procedural knowledge
      Rules for problem solving
  • Model of Learner
Represents state of knowledge of the learner, used for diagnosing the learning process
  • Model of Pedagogical Strategy
Contains knowledge and guidelines about the sequence of the learning materials, and represents of the didactical selection process of the teacher

CSCL by Depe

What are technical challenges with mobile learning? p.47

– battery life and connectivity needed

– screen size and key size

– ability for authors to visualize mobile phones for delivery

– meet required bandwidth for streaming

– content security

– standardization of phones

– reworking of e-learning material

CSCL by Depe

What are social and educational challenges with mobile learning p.48

– accessibility and cost barriers for end users

– how to access learning outside a classroom?

– support learning across many contexts

– content security or pirating issues

– frequent changes

– developing theory needed

❗️Cognitivism - Basics: Information Processing

What is the basic principle of information processing? Please describe in 4-5 sentences what happens and how we learn.

  • Information processing as a synthesis of
    • Evaluation of incoming information: what is important? what is not?
    • We do selective perception, we select important/relevant stimuli
    • We connect what we just learned with stored experiences in cognitive schemes

CSCL by Depe

❗️Zone of Proximal Development by Vygotsky

  • The zone of proximal development refers to the difference between what a learner can do without help and what he or she can achieve with guidance and encouragement from an external help.
  • The term “proximal” refers to those skills that the learner is “close” to mastering.
  • External help = can be adults or peers

CSCL by Depe

❗️Organizational Measures to support

CoPs

  • What should I do as an employer to support/promote my employees' learning in practice groups?
  • Which opportunities does the management of organisations have to foster the development of Communities of Practice?
  • Legitimize the participation of CoP (official recognition)
  • Negotiate strategical meaning of the CoPs
  • Unite existing forms of the practice
  • Adjust reward system suitably (incentives)
  • Offering support occasionally in form of external experts, travel expenses, conference rooms & community systems (resources, tools/platform, education/qualification)
