Grouping is supposed to be optimizing coordination by structuring and limiting interaction among members.

Linking on the other hand should specify the interactions between roles (/group of roles).

Discuss in how far group affective tone is related to positive and negative consequences.
There seem to be various consequences of group affective tone, based on whether it is positive, negative or on the distribution. More specifically, whether it is more or less diverse. Positive group affective tone seems to be related to better group outcomes, collective efficacy, better group coordination, and the willingness to engange in organizational citizenship behavior.
In contrast, team negative affective tone has been linked to different types of conflict, and decreases in social behavior.
Additionally low affective diversity seems to foster teamwork.

Selected Topics in Organizational Behavior

There is a problem regarding how to measure microfoundations. Explain what it is and which are the approaches to solve it.
The problem lies in the method measuring the effects between the different levels (Micro – Meso – Marco / individual – group – organization). Two different approaches are either to use the Multilevel Manifest Covariate Approach or the Multilevel Latent Covariate Approach. The traditional MMC approach aggregates the data on the individual level and then takes to L2 (so the group level) as a manifest variable, assuming perfect reliability. However, this is not always the case, especially in smaller sample sizes or group sizes. Thereby there is a loss of variance which is due to the method used. An alternative approach would be the MLC approach. Which takes the L2 variable as a latent variable, thus not assuming perfect reliability, and enabling the correction of the estimates of the group-coefficients.

On the one hand, the display of emotions is typically viewed as toxic for the career. However, according to evolutionary psychology emotions originally evolved to solve problems. In that manner they are often critical for reasoning and influence how we think about things. Thus, you might say they can be a precursor of rationality, somewhat often leading it in the first place.

According to gender studies, the male stereotype is acting rational, inclined to take charge, and with an achievement orientation. Additionally the conception of high-level organizational positions is being viewed as rational. In that manner, displaying emotions is detrimental to your career. As a man, as you do not fulfill your stereotype as well as you do not fulfill the leader high-level position stereotype and thus be viewed as less likeable and less competent. As a woman you might be more viewed as fulfilling (the more emotionally sensitive) stereotype of being a woman, however thereby being not viewed as a good candidate for a high-level organizational position. This is what is referred to as the double bind for women. So even if they would act in a more rational, masculine manner, they would then be viewed as less likeable.

Behavioral style theories:
Likert’s four styles of leadership.
He differentiated between authoritative, benevolent authoritative, consultative, and participative leadership styles.

Blake and Mouton’s Managerial/Leadership Grid (1991)
Leaders can be categorized by their concern for people and for production. Should have a high concern for both.

Contingency Theories:
Fiedler’s contingency model.
Fiedler differentiates between task-motivated which are better in high control situations and relationship-oriented leaders, which are better in low control situations.

Hersey & Blanchard’s situational leadership theory.
Leaders show combinations of (again) task- and relationship motivated styles. Follower readiness determines then the effectiveness of these styles.
