Weitere Module5 ECTS
Methods
Students learn modern analytical and evaluation methods for Physical Geography issues including remote sensing, modelling, multivariate statistics, time series analysis, geochronology, and physico-chemical characterization. Total of 15 ECTS must be earned in semesters 1-3 from methods courses.
Weitere Module5 ECTS
Research Training II
Module serves to consolidate independent scientific work through further practical analyses, evaluations and representations of environmental scientific data. Issues can continue from R1 or arise from independent topics.
1. Semester5 ECTS
Theories in Environmental Geography/Scientific Working
Students learn basic theories and concepts of Physical Geography and deal critically with these. Basic principles of scientific work such as literature review, hypothesis formation and method selection are conveyed. Personal and social-communicative competencies are trained intensively in small groups.
1. Semester5 ECTS
Debated Topics in Environmental Geography
Students independently prepare and present selected current topics of Physical Geography. The seminar focuses on controversial debate and critical thinking, allowing students to critically examine topics based on various theories and paradigms.
1. Semester5 ECTS
Earth, Soil, Surface
Students learn about environmental geomorphology, geological substrates, relief processes, soil formation and how these interact as a basis for understanding the earth's surface. The module addresses natural and anthropogenic processes that change the environment, soil contamination, landscape protection and natural risks.
1. Semester5 ECTS
Climate, Water, Vegetation
Students gain insight into specialized topics in climate, water, or vegetation systems and develop a problem- and process-oriented understanding of interactions between different spheres, especially on a global scale.
2. Semester5 ECTS
Earth, Soil, Surface II
Students learn to understand contemporary geosystems as products of recent and previous processes. Focus lies on analyzing and reconstructing process flows in spatio-temporal dynamics, especially interactions between lithosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
2. Semester5 ECTS
Climate, Water, Vegetation II
Students learn how global changes of environmental systems manifest themselves on regional and local scales. The focus is on temporal dynamics and spatial patterns of climate, water, and vegetation systems, and their interactions in context of global change.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Research Training I
Students conduct independent practical work on environmental issues through field exercises, intensive internships or science schools. They formulate research questions, work methodically on them, and present results. The module introduces students to independent scientific work.
2. Semester5 ECTS
Environment and Society
Topics of society-environment relationships are explored through independent student presentations and written term papers, linking environmental science with social science issues.
3. Semester5 ECTS
Research Training III
Students communicate research concepts through participation in scientific conferences, schools, or independent presentation of results from R1 and R2 modules in workshops or exhibitions at the University of Bayreuth.
3. Semester5 ECTS
Internship
Non-university internship of at least four weeks duration providing insights into professional practice at institutions dealing with environmental issues. Can be extended to eight weeks through module F.
4. Semester30 ECTS
Master's Thesis and Defence
Independent handling of a scientific Physical Geography topic over 6 months, preceded by preparation of a research plan in consultation with supervisors and oral presentation within a group seminar. Concludes with defence before a two-member board of examiners.
