1. Semester10 ECTS
Evolutionary Theory
Comprehensive overview of evolutionary theory from basic population genetics to specific models of key questions in evolution. Covers topics including levels of selection, natural selection, social evolution, sexual selection, and life history theory through lectures, seminars, and practical exercises.
1. Semester10 ECTS
Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Behaviour
Introduction to key concepts in evolutionary and behavioural ecology including sexual selection, co-evolution, biotic interactions, and conservation science. Includes experimental design, data collection, statistical analyses, and laboratory techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction and molecular methods.
1. Semester10 ECTS
Population Genetics and Genomics
Introduction to classical and coalescent theory-based population genetics and statistical genomics methods. Covers allele frequencies, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, effective population size, population structure, and coalescent theory, with a practical bioinformatics course on genome data analysis and bash scripting.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Evolution of Species Interactions
Covers principles and concepts in the evolution of species interactions including plant-herbivore, plant-pollinator, and plant-microbe interactions. Combines theoretical concepts with practical methods in experimental design, analytical chemistry, evolutionary genetics, and molecular biology.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Social Evolution: from genes to behavior
Advanced study of animal behaviour, evolution, and behavioural genomics including communication, insect evolution, speciation, social evolution, and phenotypic plasticity. Includes field and lab-based experiments, chemical analyses, and genomic/transcriptomic data analysis.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Evolution in Natural Populations
Understanding evolutionary theory concepts such as natural selection, genetic drift, gene flow, and mutation as they apply to natural populations. Focuses on analyzing empirical data on genetic diversity and the role of natural selection in shaping phenotypic variation.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Evolutionary modelling
Advanced mathematical and computational methods for analyzing evolutionary scenarios including population genetics, quantitative genetics, game-theoretical models, and individual-based simulations. Covers applications to life history theory, sexual selection, social evolution, and evolutionary rescue.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Computational Biology
Elective module on computational approaches to evolutionary biology topics.
2. Semester10 ECTS
Genomics and DNA Sequence Analysis
Elective module covering genomics and bioinformatics approaches to DNA sequence analysis.
3. Semester10 ECTS
Additional Qualifications
Series of individual courses providing additional soft skills, which can be taken throughout the entire duration of the study program.
3. Semester20 ECTS
Project Work
Independently conducted scientific experiments in laboratory, theoretical or computational settings. Data generated in this module are analyzed and documented in the Master's thesis module.
4. Semester30 ECTS
Master Thesis
