  • Replication requires DNA polymerase which adds nucleotides to the 3’ end of a strand.
  • DNA helix is unwound by helicase, hydrogen bonds break, two template strands are formed.
  • A primer is added to the leading strand by Primase.
  • The leading strand replicates continuously from the 5’ to the 3’ end.
  • The lagging strand is replicate in fragments from the 3’ end to the 5’ end. These fragments are know as Okazaki fragments.
  • Ligase adds these fragments together.
