  • During fetal development, primordial germ cells (oögonia) migrate from embryonic yolk sac to ovarian cortex 
  • Multiply by mitosis, increase in # to ~500,000 by 4th or 5th month of gestation
  • Begin 1st meiotic division as 1’ oöcytes
  • Arrest development at prophase I and remain as 1’ oöcytes (within primordial follicles) until ovulation (from 12-50 yrs later)
  • Follicle development and maturation stimulated by FSH from anterior pituitary during follicular phase of monthly menstrual cycle
