theories which are centred on or focus on the males

Theories which exaggerate the difference between males and females

Theories which ignore or minimise the sex difference, and often assume that findings from males can apply = to females

What is an example of Alpha-biased?


Sigmund Freud exaggerated the difference in male and female as states that woman are inferior to male as they suffer from "penis envy". Additional, he stated femininity is a failed form of masculinity

What is Gender Bias?
The differential treatment and/or representation of males and females, based on stereotypes and not real differences

What is an example of Beta-bias?
An example of Beta-bias is in the Biological research into flight or fight response. Research has often been carried out on male subjects. It was assumed that it was no problems as the flight or fight response would be the same for both genders

What is an example of androcentrism?
-The results of Beta-bias in psychological research is that we end up with a view of human nature that supposed to apply to man amd women alike, but in fact, has a male or androcentric view.
-e.g Asch's research into conformity was conducted on a sample of 123 males. Asch assumed that the findings would be similar to both genders. E.g Beta-bias

What is Cultural Beta-bias?
When real cultural differences are ignored or minimised, and all people are assumed to be the same, resulting in universal research designs and conclusions.

What is Ethnocentrism?
Seeing the world only from ones own cultural perspective. And believing that this one perspective is both normal and correct.

Insist that behaviour can be properly understood only if the cultural context is taken into consideration
