How did things change for the nobility after the Battle of Bosworth?

Henry VII deeply distrusted the nobility, after seeing the turbulence and their side-switching during the Wars of the Roses. Therefore, he aimed to limit their political and social influence (eg by legislation against retaining and through bonds and recogniscances to combat their immense wealth).

When and why did Henry take a hiatus from foreign policy?

  • 1527-1540
  • Lack of funds - Henry was unable to raise the money he needed following the Amicable Grant crisis.
  • The break from Rome

Why was the 1512 invasion of southwest France a failure?

  • Henry was reliant on the aid of Ferdinand of Aragon, which failed to materialise as the English invasion acted as a diversion allowing his own invasion of Navarre.
  • The English troops were insufficiently supplied resulting in deaths of dystentry and unable to fight alone forcing a retreat.
