R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What are the benefits of propagating plants vegetatively?

Retains characteristics of the parent plant

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

State benefits of propagating plants from seed.

Produces variation

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What are the limitations of propagating plants vegetatively?

Requires different skills to that of seed sowing

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What are the main horticultural uses of seed?

Vegetable and bedding production

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What is the hilum and the micropyle?

The hilum is the scar on the testa where the seed was attached to the fruit

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What is the testa of a seed?

Also known as the seed coat, it is formed from outer layers of the ovule after fertilisation. It is a waterproof, airtight container, and may have inhibitors in it to enable the seed to lay dormant over the winter

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What is the embryo?

The embryo is the immature plant, protected by the testa (seed coat).

It consists of a radicle (root) and plumule (shoot) and cotyledon/s (seed leaves).

Between the radicle and the cotyledon is the hypocotyl and between the cotyledon and the plumule is the epicotyl.

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

State some limitations of growing plants from seed.

Sometimes the seed is not viable.

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What is meant by seed viability?

A viable seed is a seed that is capable of germinating, given the right conditions. If it cannot germinate given those conditions, it is unviable.

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What are the requirements for seed germination?

moisture - to be taken in usually at the micropyle and then to provide water for the seedling for turgidity

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What is meant by seed dormancy?

This is when a viable seed does not germinate under the usual conditions (moisture, temperature, oxygen, light/dark). It usually requires further conditions such as stratification (cold).

R2104 Understanding Plant Propagation

What is the cotyledon?

The cotyledons are the seed leaves. They can act as a food storage, for example in Phaseolus vulgaris (french bean).
