Flashcard Flashcard

Exemplary flashcards for Biologische Psychologie II at the Universität Wien on StudySmarter:

Biologische Psychologie II

What is homeostasis?

the process by which the hypothalamus regulates the body's internal environment to maintain the narrow range in which we can survive

Biologische Psychologie II

What are the 3 functional zones of the Hypothalamus?

  • Lateral zone
  • ventral zone
  • periventricular zone

Biologische Psychologie II

From where does the periventricular zone get its input?

other zones, brain stem, telencephalon

Biologische Psychologie II

What is the role of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN)?

synchronizes circadian rhythm with light-dark cycle (innervated by optic nerves)

Biologische Psychologie II

Which part of the pituitary is innervated by magnocellular neurosecretoy cells/parvocellular cells?

  • posterior pituitary: magnocellular
  • anterior: parvocellular

Biologische Psychologie II

Which 2 hormones are released by the magnocellular neurosecretory cells?

  • Oxytocin
  • Vasopressin/antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

Biologische Psychologie II

The secretion of which glands are regulated by the anterior pituitary?

  • gonands
  • thyroid glands
  • adrenal glands
  • mammary glands

Biologische Psychologie II

How do the parvocellular neurosecretoy cells communicate with the anterior pituitary?

release hypophysiotropic hormones into capillary bed (hypothalamo-pituitary portal circulation). These hormones bind to receptors on the surface of pituitary cells, causing (stopping of) secretion of hormones

Biologische Psychologie II

what happens when we are stressed (adrenal glands)?

parvocellular neurons relase CRH

-> CRH travels to anterior pituitary -> stimulates relase of ACTH -> ACTH enters general circulation, travels to adrenal cortex -> cortisol release -> cortisol passes through blood brain barrier -> interacts with receptors, inhibits CRH

Biologische Psychologie II

How do you call the synthetic form of cortisol?

Prednisone

Biologische Psychologie II

Which are the 2 parts of the adrenal gland

  • adrenal cortex
  • adrenal medulla

Biologische Psychologie II

Which 3 components of the nervous system play a role in communication over longer periods of time and bigger distances?

  • Neurons of the secretory hypothalamus
  • The autonomic nercous system (ANS)
  • Diffuse modulatory systems of the brain
