The representation of speech sounds

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

< > for spelling       e.g. <think>

     for concrete sounds

Every sound in a language is represented by a particular symbol. Letters are used for spelling and are not consistent in representing the corresponding sounds.

The sound symbols are collected in the:

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

Consonants can either be voiced or voiceless.

In the articulation of a voiceless sound the vocal chords are apart and air can pass unhindered; there is no vibration.

In the articulation of a voiced sound the vocal chords are closed; the air forces the chords to open a bit; they close again, etc.
