Name the major types of infectious diseases according to clinical outcome
- infections of the respiratory tract/pneumoniae
- Meningitis
- Systemic infections/septicaemia
- urinary tract infections
- Diarrhea
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Skin and wound infections

Microbiology

What are the clinical outcomes of upper urinary tract infections?
- fever
- renal angle tenderness
- reduced urination

Microbiology

What are the clinical outcomes of lower urinary tract infections?
- no fever!
- frequent micturition
- painful micturition

Microbiology

Name the  major pathogens of UTIs inside the hospital and outside the hospital
inside hospital: Candida
outside hospital: E. Coli

Microbiology

Describe the course of infection by urupathogenic E. coli (UPEC)
(1) Contamination of periurethral area
(2) Adherence to uruepithelial cells by type 1 and P fimbriae
(3) Invasion: Intracell. multiplication observed for multiple strains
(4) Apoptosis and exfoliation of bladder epithelial cells
(5) Influx of PMNs
(6) Type 1 fimbriae E.coli selected at high CFU and low O2
(7) E. coli ascends to kidney
(8) P fimbriae bind to renal tubular epithelial cells
(9) Cytokines induced
(10)Haemolysin damages epithelium
(11) Sat vacuolates epithelial cell and damages glomeruli
(12) E. coli crosses tubular epithelial cell barrier to initiate bacteraemia (=move into bloodstream)

Microbiology

Where are P Pili of E. coli encoded?
Subunit and assembly-machinery encoded in pap operon.

Microbiology

Describe characteristics of adherence of UPEC.
- adherence is essential to prevent washing out
- Type 1 Pili: associated with bladder infections, various types but all recognize similar sugar chains- P fimbriae: associated particularly with pyelonephritis (Kidney infection)

Microbiology

Name some cell-associated pathogenicity factors of e. coli
- liposaccharid (O-Antigen) -> inflammation
- capsule (K- antigen) -> anti-phagocytic
- Flagella (H- antigen) -> motility
- type 1 & P pili, non-fimbrie adhesions -> colonisation

Microbiology

Name some extra cell. pathogenicity factors of e. coli
hemolysins (HLyA) -> cytolysis

Microbiology

What are the clinical outcomes of diarrhea?
- watery to bloody-mucous stool -> frequent dejection
- with or without fever
- abdominal pain/cramps
dehydration, cal lead to death (particularlychildren under 5 years in developing countries)

Microbiology

Right or wrong?: Diarrhea is always caused by infectious agents
Nope
