Exemplary flashcards for Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery at the TU München on StudySmarter:

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What kind of surgical devices are there?
  • Scalpels
  • Pincers / forceps
  • Scissors
  • Fixation instruments / clamps
  • Retractors
  • Self retaining retractors
  • Needle holders
  • Linear stapling devices
  • Circular stapling devices

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What kind of forceps are there and what are the differences?
  • Anatomical forceps
  • Surgical forceps

Anatomical forceps have a blunter tip for grasping gently, whereas surgical forceps have a sharper tip (with teeth) to fixate tissue.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What are retractors used for?
They are used to push tissue aside / hold open cavities.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What are self retaining retractors?
Self retaining retractors are retractors that can hold a cavity open without needing someone to hold it.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What are stapling devices and what are they used for? What kind exist?
Stapling devices are used to connect tissue together, to „staple“ it together. There exists linear stapling devices for conventional and laparoscopic surgery as well as circular stapling devices to connect end to end.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

Give an example of where you could use a circular stapling device.
A circular stapling device could be used for anastomosis in i.e. the colon.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What is anastomosis?
Anastomosis is the (surgical) connection of adjacent tissue. It is usually used to refer to the connection of tube-like structures, like the colon.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What kinds of anastomosis configurations exist?
  • Side to side
  • End to end
  • End to side

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What does „pneumoperitoneum“ mean?
Pneumoperitoneum refers to the (abnormal) presence of gas or air in the peritoneal cavity (abdomen).

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What gas is used for pneumoperitoneum?
  • CO2 (more often)
  • Air
  • N2O
  • Helium
(However, laparoscopy can be performed without gas / pneumoperitoneum)

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What is a trocar? What is it used for?
A trocar is a tubular device used to create a pathway into the abdominal cavity so the camera and other instruments can be inserted for laparoscopic surgery.

Medical instrumentation and computer aided surgery

What‘s a surgical clip? What kinds are there?
A small device used for wound closure, connection of tissues, etc. (used instead of sutures).
There exists clips that stay in the body (usually titanium) and clips that are resorbed by the body.
