What's the difference between game logic, data and a game engine?

Game logic consists of algorithms which realize the game rules, therefore different kinds of data are used in a game engine that consists of other algorithms that are “independent” of the game logic and data too.

Media assets, level data, object configuration data, user interface configuration data and engine configuration data.

How is modelling seperated?

It’s seperated in shape modelling that deals mainly with geometric primitves and appeareance modelling that deals with color, reflection, texturres, etc. (properties).

What is a polygon mesh?

A surface composed of polygons. They can be hollow, if they’re closed.

How do you present structures with high curvature?

Because polygonal approximations are typically adaptive, you use more or smaller polygons to present structures with many details.

What is valence?

Valence is the number of edges that are connected to a vertex.

How do we store (represent) a triangle mesh?

With geometry, topoplogy and explicit representation (three vertices for each of the F triangles).

What benefit does procedural modeling have?

It automatically creates 3D models and textures from sets of rules.

Why do we need the Diamond-Square-Algorithm?

We can generate a terrain field with random midpoint displacements. We can achieve this with the algortihm.

How does the Diamond-Square-Algortihm work?

1. Assign (random) values to the corners

2. (Diamond) Assign the average of four corners plus a random
displacement to the midpoint

3. (Square) For each diamond, average four corners and add a
random displacement

4. Repeat step 2 and 3 for a given number of iterations

What needs to be specified to lit (illuminate) a model?

  • Light source properties

  • Appearance properties like reflection, absorption

How long is the surface normal?

1, because it’s always normalized to this length
