Drawbacks:
- Dependancy on a crypto currency
- high energy consumption
- limited TA throughput

- intermediary-free transactions of digital, non-copyable goods --> no third party needed (as a financial institute) to ensure the validity of the TA

- digital identities for people and machines that can perform secure transactions (--> anonymous), all transaction details are stored immutable (in the blocks) and decentralized (Blockchain copies lie on a plurality of servers)

- smart contracts (automated, programmable contracts) ensure contract compliance

A blockchain is a distributed database that maintains a continously growing list of ordered records called blocks. They are, by design, inherently resistant to modification of the recorded data.

Benefits: they are efficient, scalable and consist of standardized components

Drawbacks: they require trust in the platform provider (on availability of the service, sufficiency of resources, conditions and no manipulations)

A blockchain is a system that enables parties that do not fully trust each other to form and maintain a consensus about the existence, status and evolution of a set of shared facts.

3 additional properties of cryptographic hash functions
1. Preimage Resistance --> The hash function h is a one-way function. There exists no function h^-1 that is able to find the input x out to an output of h. It is computationally infeasible.

2. 2nd Preimage Resistance --> Given some known input x, it is impossible to find a second input x' with x'!= x that computes to the same hash output. h(x) never = h(x').

3. Collision Resistance --> It is impossible to find any two input values x and y (such that x != y) that compute to the same output of h. h(x) never= h(y) if x!=y)

Idea: From centralized management today to decentralized management in a blockchain
- centralized data management ---> decentralized
- non-transparent platform operations --> transparent
- exclusive platform ownership --> shared

BUT for all that the Blockchain needs to be governed regarding its ecosystem, its applications and its infrastructure

(Broken and Safe ones)
Broken: Message Digest 4 and 5 (MD4 & MD5), Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA-1)

Safe: SHA-2 & SHA-3 (favourable)

Always use one of the existing hash algorithms!

SHA was invented by the NIST (National Institute for standards and technology) and the NSA.
Keccak (= a family of hash alogrithms with different parameters) is the SHA-3 standard
