-> Lords Spiritual: representatives of Chruch of England (Archbishop pf York, Archbishop of Canterbury, 24 senior bishops)

- amending function: peers debate and amend bills that originate in the House of Commons (peers can't initiate legislation)

How does legislation work?

- government proposes new law in the House of Commons

- house decides by simple majority whether proposal should be taken a step further or abandoned

- in order to become law, the Bill needs to be accepted by both houses and given the Royal Assent

How do elections in the UK work?

- each constituency brings 1 MP to House of Commons --> 650 constituencies

- first-past-the-post-system: candidate with most votes in a constituency becomes MP (relative majority instead of absolute majority)

- party with most seats usually forms government

What is special about the constitution of the UK?

- UK doesn't have a written constitution (it is not embodied in a single document)
- British constitution is oldest constitution still in force
- British constitution is in a state of perpetual change and evolution --> dynamic nature

What does the British Constitution consist of?

- statute law (Acts of Parliament)
- common law (judge made)
- conventions (unwritten rules of constitutional practice)
- certain ancient documents (e.g. Magna Charta)

- before Brexit: EU law

What are the duties of the Queen?

- opening and dissolving of the UK parliament

- Royal Assent (gives her signatures to bills)

- appointing government ministers and public figures

- granting honors

- leading proceedings of the Privy Council (consists of 400 advisors)

- appointing the Prime Minister
