presentation & communication techniques

Definition "communication"

process of understanding and sharing meaning.
process = dynamic activity, always changing
understand = relate, perceive
sharing = conveying, transfer of thoughts
meaning = significance

presentation & communication techniques

explain transactional model of communication
an exchange of a message/feedback between source and receiver

secondary elements (context, interference, environment) effect but do not determine

simultaneously switching between dominant and submissive (source/receiver) part of the communication

presentation & communication techniques

what is the constructivist model of communication
construct = to build

negotiation -> agreement

negotiated meaning (=focus) impacted by channel, environment, interference, context (dominantly effecting meaning)

through mutual negotiation both partners of the conversation construct meaning

negotiation may also mean internal negotiation about the meaning of the message

every process of understanding is influenced by your culture

culture is everything and your personal reaction to it

presentation & communication techniques

communication types
intra personal (own thoughts and feelings... communication with yourself)

inter personal (involves 2 people communicating, informal VS. formal is based on level of intimacy) e. g. Dialoge, Interview, doctor-patient

group (3-8/10 people (small groups) if more, the group tends to break up into smaller groups (micro- or sub-groups), resulting in INTER PERSONAL COMMUNICATION e. g. group - work, teamwork, friends

public (different dynamics: receiver in submissive position, role of source is primary, emphasis more on message than participants (?)) e. g. lecture, conference, tourguide

mass (larger group, not necessarily known)

presentation & communication techniques

GROUP COMMUNICATION
definition of a group (different than group communication type)
3 or more people who affiliate (interact, cooperate)
they exchange information because they have something in common

the bigger the group the more likely it is for sub groups to emerge

presentation & communication techniques

important facts about group communication
more formal /less personal (dependent on norms);
better distinction of who is receiver/sender;
turntaking / not as simultaneous;
shared time;
takes more time and energy (effort);
competing agendas/ perspectives (>agreement is harder to be reached)

presentation & communication techniques

advantages in working groups
feeling of support/belonging/companionship > makes us perform better as individuals

curbs extreme personalities

building relationships and network > helps later on

presentation & communication techniques

disadvantages of groups
time/energy consuming (to create, repair, maintain the relationship)

feelings can be hurt (>changes perspective on group/individuals)

bad people (shrinking their duties, lie...) untermine the relationship in the group

presentation & communication techniques

primary vs secondary groups
primary group: existential /part of your character. you are reliant on those groups (gender, age, nationality)

secondary group: not defining, you don't need them to live

presentation & communication techniques

life cycle of a Group
forming
storming
norming
performing
adjourning

presentation & communication techniques

life cycle of roles
potential member
new member
full member (leadership possible)

divergent (member) : focus on different things/agenda from the group > can derail or lead the group into better direction

marginal (member) : in-and-out , active and inactive, can e. g. be the boss (=>self selected lack of involvement)

ex (member) :no longer considered a member

presentation & communication techniques

positive roles in groups
Initiator (coordinator) =deligator, comes up with new ideas, potential leader, connects/brings group forward, engages others

Coordinator =brings ideas and people together. does not come up with new ideas, linking task and group

Elaborator = good at explaining /elaborating / providing examples, evidence; offers clarity

evaluator = only positive if it's positive/konstructive criticism. helps the group understand. only positive if it doesn't affect the groups productivity

recorder = sums up, provides contributions, group memory, without him : information is lost, keeps momentum of group moving >! essential
