Visceral layer
The innermost layer of the serous pericardium, lines the heart (AKA epicardium)
What does the right coronary artery supply?
What does the right AV valve do?
prevents backflow from the right ventricle to the right atrium
What is the coronary sinus?
large transverse vein on the hearts posterior which the cardiac veins empty into, returns blood to right atrium
What does the pulmonary valve do?
prevents backflow from the pulmonary artery to the right ventricle
Atria
The top cavities of the heart, serve primarily as reservoirs, don't generate much force because they only have to move blood a short distance
Ventricles
Serve as pumps, receiving blood from the atria and pumping it to either lungs(right) or body(left). Walls are thicker because they have to generate more force (especially left)
Interatrial Septum and Intraventricular Septum
Separate the left and right parts of the atrium or septum respectively
What does the left AV valve do?
Prevents backflow from the left ventricle to the left atrium
Where is the base of the heart?
The top, where blood vessels leave and enter
Where is the apex of the heart?
The bottom (the point), where the strongest beat can be heard
Serous Pericardium
Innermost layer (actually two layers), covers the heart's surface
