History of Psychology

What were the 3 main problems of the Greek Philosophy?
- Search for structure of the world without referring to myths
- Everything should be based on observation and arguments
- Knowledge of ourselves is necessary for general knowledge

History of Psychology

What happened during the Socratic turn of Philosophy?
- “Turn towards inside” (Socrates then Plato) : Knowledge of nature and justness requires knowledge of human soul
- “Republic” (by Plato) : explaining notions of ethics, politics and psychology

History of Psychology

What are Plato’s 3 main Theory of Ideas?
- The soul pre-exists the body and is “buried” in it after our birth
- Soul mediates between physical and mental realm
- Hierarchical model of Psyche : Reason governs temper and desires, aiming for harmony between all parts of soul (Like Freud’s theory later on : reason = id)

History of Psychology

What did Aristotle argue?
- Ideas do NOT exist beyond physical objects but WITHIN them (≠Plato)
- Psyche is the form of ALL living beings
- Morphe : structure and development matter

History of Psychology

What is Aristotle’s idea of the “Psyche” ?
- It’s a form of organism connected to the body
- It’s an organizing principle of the living organism (organization and realization)
- It’s a network of functions and processes which differs between different species and individuals

History of Psychology

What are the 3 causes and principle of life of Aristotle’s Psyche?
- Cause of effect : Psyche sets organism in motion
- Cause of form : Psyche organizes the harmonious interaction of organs
- Cause of target : Psyche sets goals for every action of organism

History of Psychology

What is new about Aristotle’s idea of the Psyche?
- Higher functions of the soul construct a completely new system
- Centre of the Psyche lies in the heart, heats the body and controls the periphery
- Body = well-governed city (centre transmits info through organs, etc)
- Organism and Psyche = inseparable

History of Psychology

What does Aristotle explain in his “Hylemorphism” ?
- Beyond idealism and materialsm : no Psyche without living organism, no organism without psyche
- Psyche not bound to consciousness
- Psyche encompasses processes of metabolism, movement, ...

History of Psychology

What are the 5 main ideas of Neoplatonism?
- Soul mediates between realm of ideas and material world : Human being = double-poled
- Body causes affects, pleasure, desire
- Through reason, man becomes one with its soul
- Soul controls the body, one needs to know its structure and functioning
- Examination of conscience

History of Psychology

Who were the 3 important Philosophers/Psychologists during the Rise of Christianity ?
- Tertullian : First Christian psychologist
- Augustine : Neoplatonistic
- Thomas Aquinas : Catholic philosopher

History of Psychology

Tertullian VS Augustine...?
Tertullian :
- Spirit = material, air-like substance which steers body
- Soul reveals itself through reason and free will

Augustine :
- Soul = immaterial, controls body, dominates desires
- Soul = substance gifted with reason already

History of Psychology

Which were the 3 early western concepts of the ”psyche” developed by the Pre-Socratics

- H&H (Homer&Hesiod) : spirit is gone when dead
- Psyche processes take place outside and inside body
- Psyche connects with parts of body
