Life Science

Explain what is the endocrine system
The endocrine system consist of hormone-secreting glands.

Life Science

What is an endocrine gland?
An endocrine gland is ductless gland. It is a gland that produces hormones and releases them into the bloodstream to act at a distant site

Life Science

What is an exocrine gland?
It is a gland that discharges  its secretion through a duct ➪ into a body cavity or onto the skin

Life Science

What is another name for the pituitary gland?
Hypophysis

Life Science

What is the name of the stalk that attaches the pituitary gland to the hypothalamus?
Infundibulum

Life Science

What hormones does the anterior lobe secrete?
hGh (human growth hormone)
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone)
LH (luteinising hormone)
Prolactin
TSH (thyroid simulating hormone)

Life Science

State the functions of the following hormones secreted by the luteinising hormone:
-hGH
TSH
LH
Prolactin
FSH
hGH: human growth hormone
This hormone stimulates general body growth and metabolism

TSH: thyroid stimulating hormone
This hormone stimulates the thyroid gland to secrete thyroxine

Prolactin: this hormone produces and secretes milk after birth

FSH: this hormone causes the development of ova in females and sperm in males.

LH: luteinising hormone
This hormone stimulates ovulation and the formation of the corpus lutheum

Life Science

Describe the body's loss of water on a hot and cold day.
On a hot day...
1. Increased secretion of ADH
2. Increase in the permeability of the walls of the distal convulated tubules and collecting tubules of nephron to water.
3. More water leaves the tubules and enters the medulla.
4. Water is reabsorbed by the capillary network around the tubules.

On a cold day..
1. Decreased secretion of ADH
2. Decreased permeability of the walls of the distal convulated tubule and collecting tubule of nephron to water.
3. Less water leaves tubule and enters the medulla.
4. Dilute urine is produced.
5. Increase in the frequency of urination on cold days

Life Science

What two hormones does the posterior lobe store?
ADH (antidurectic hormone)
Oxytocin

Life Science

State the function of Oxytocin?
1. Stimulates the contraction of the uterine muscles during labour
2. Stimulates milk flow

Life Science

State the functions of the hypothalamus
1. Secretes ADH and Oxytocin
2. Controls the functioning of the pituitary gland

Life Science

State the functions of thyroxin

1. Regulates oxygen use
2. Regulates metabolic rate
3. Regulates growth and development
