TESTE DEIN WISSEN

What are arguments against logical behaviorism?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

- Actors can play to be in pain when actually having different disposition as someone who is actually in pain

- Mental holism: mental states are part of complex network of states - behavior is connected to more than just one mental set

= same kind of behavior can be caused by various different networks of mental stages

- Intelligent behavior may have different cause than non-intelligent behavior - causes of intelligent behavior may well be referred to as mind

What is the central idea behind functionalism?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

= we should not characterize mental states in terms of what they ARE but rather in terms of what they DO

- mental state: characterized by how it is caused & what it causes

What point is Ryle missing out in logical behaviorism (problem)?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

Does not deal with fact that there is something in mind that cannot be captured by behavior

What is a problem with Decartes explanation to the interactionist problem with regard to the causal closeness of physical realm?

TESTE DEIN WISSEN

Pineal gland is a physical organ: everything that happens has a physical explanation

= immaterial soul is useless

Explain the terms "soul" and "substance" in a view of a substance dualist

Soul: seat of mental states and processes

Substance: something that can exist independently

Explain what is meant by the explanatory gap?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

- stating that mental states are brain states does not explain anything

= how can intentionality and phenomenality be physical (same as electronic activity)?

Name two features of Cartesian dualism

TESTE DEIN WISSEN

What is logical behaviorism?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

mental concepts can be explained in terms of behavioral concepts

- mental states are behavioral dispositions (tendency to act in a certain way under certain circumstances)

Lösung ausblenden
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

Explain how Ryle criticizes Dualism (para-mechanical hypothesis)

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

We do not need an explanation because we already made a distinction between intelligent and non-intelligent behavior

- because its just conceptual distinction P.M hypothesis does not add anything to distinction

- dualism mistake: conceptual distinction turned into causal distinction

- people do not stick to hidden locus of control (Mind) but rather distinction

What is the mind according to Ryle?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

It is not a thing -> category mistake

Mind is not soul/brain but it is a set of dispositions

What is psychological behaviorism?

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

- behavior is central stage (same as logical behaviorism)

- psychological mind is not focus at all - behavior is center of attention

= think that body & mind are separated

TESTE DEIN WISSEN

Explain the influence of logical behaviorism on functionalism (+ difference)

Lösung anzeigen
TESTE DEIN WISSEN

- both start by defining what they mean by mental states

- sensory inputs + behavioral outputs = behavioral dispositions

- difference: people also supposed to have internal mental states that also causally interact with inputs & outputs (same behavior caused by different mental states)
