Name 12 suggestions for the use of interpreters in intercultural communication

  1. Make sure that the interpreter is impartial and does not take sides. When in doubt, bring your own translator with you.

  2. Engage your counterpart (and not the interpreter) to study his/her non- verbal language.

  3. Avoid humor and colloquial terms which might be misunderstood in another culture.

  4. Be particularly careful with numbers. “2,567” is not the same in Germany and the U.S.

  5. Avoid using terms from other languages. Don’t expect an interpreter who speaks German and Chinese to speak English as well.

  6. Try to illustrate your ideas with images. Pictures are often easier to understand in another cultural context than words.

  7. Don’t interrupt the interpreter. Wait until he/she has translated all which has been said.

  8. Double-check if the translator has precisely said what you and your counter- part have aimed to say (e.g., by queries such as “did you really mean that...”)

  9. Use short sentences and avoid difficult grammatical structures.

  10.  Plan for twice as much time.

  11. Make a break after 3-4 sentences and allow the interpreter to translate them. The longer your expressions are, the more meaning may be lost during translation.

  12. It is always useful if one member of your team has at least basic knowledge of the foreign language. Potential misunderstandings and biases may be recognized much more easily.

Interkulturelle Kompetenz 2

Why is it a problem, that intercultural management research is dominated by US-based researchers?

  • some countries are often even ignored (e.g Afghanistan, Laos, Yemen, Uruguay, Iceland)
  • several countries have only rarely, or never at all, been studied (Hong Kong, South Afrika, Taiwan)

Interkulturelle Kompetenz 2
