How does fluid simulation work on a high level? What are the 3 main operations?

Think of a fluid as a collection of boxes or cells. Each box has various properties, like velocity and density. These boxes interact with their neighbors, affecting their velocity and density.


For one simulation there are 3 main operations.

  • diffuse: the velocities of the fluids need to spread out
  • project: since our fluid is incompressible this means that the amount of fluid in each box has to stay constant. So the amount of fluid going in has to be exactly equal to the amount of fluid going out. So this operation runs through all the cells and fixes them so everything is in equilibrium
  • advect: advection means that we apply the velocities to things in the fluid and we also change the velocities based on the velocities before
